The price is driven by three things: the size of the shower, the tile format, and whether the walls need a full waterproofing system rebuilt behind them.
It depends on the size of the bathroom, the tile format, and how much has to be rebuilt behind the walls. What never changes is the curing — waterproofing and mortar each need time to set before the next step, and compressing those days is the most common reason a shower fails a year later. You get a start date and a realistic finish date in writing with your estimate.
KERDI is a bonded waterproofing membrane that goes on the walls before the tile. Tile and grout are not waterproof — water passes through them. Without a membrane behind it, the water reaches the framing. Every wet area we build gets a full Schluter system.
Usually yes. It depends on the floor structure — the drain area has to be recessed so the shower pitches without a curb. On a wood-framed floor that means modifying the joists; on a slab it’s simpler. We check that on the estimate visit.
Sometimes, but rarely in a shower. The old tile has to be sound, flat and well bonded, and you raise the floor height. In wet areas we almost always remove it — otherwise you’re building a waterproofing system on top of an unknown one.

Almost always movement or moisture underneath — a substrate that wasn’t flat, no uncoupling membrane, or a failed waterproofing layer. The tile is the symptom; the cause is behind it.
Yes — and that’s really the only practical moment, because the heating layer goes under the tile. We use Schluter DITRA-HEAT: the same membrane that holds the heating cable also uncouples the tile from the subfloor, so the layer that warms your floor is the layer that keeps it from cracking. It runs on its own thermostat and heats only the room you’re using.
